Great Lakes Delivery Captain

Information & FAQs

What types of boats do you deliver?

We deliver all types and sizes of power boats. At this time, we are not delivering sailing vessels.

Where do you delivery to and from?

We can deliver to and from anywhere! Our only limitation is time. If we can fit your delivery into a time frame that's available, then we are happy to bring your boat wherever it needs to go.

What types of boat deliveries do you perform?

There are many circumstances in which a boat owner finds the need for a delivery captain. Our most common deliveries are for purchased boats that need to be brought to their new marina. Other times, owners want to stay on their boat while vacationing. Very common in our area are boat owners who wish to spend time in Door County, WI or the upper Michigan area. We bring their boat there, get it set up in a transient slip for their vacation and then bring it back to their home port when they're finished. We also assist brokers and manufacturers in moving boats between sales locations and trade shows. So, if you have a boat that needs to be moved over the water, we can help.

How much will it cost to deliver my boat?

That's not a one size fits all question; however, we have no hidden fees in our transparent billing. The Captain's fee is $350 per day and deckhand's are $200 per day (billed by full day only). If the delivery spans multiple days, $50 per diem will be added for each member of the crew. All additional costs are billed to the boat owner at actual rates. We do not mark up any expenses, and receipts will be provided with the final invoice. The number of deckhands needed varies based on the size of the vessel and assistance available at any stop locations; however, we’ve found that a majority of the time just the Captain and maybe one deckhand is plenty.

What are the additional costs?

Any costs other than the Captain and Deckhand fees associated with delivering your boat are additional, and invoiced to you at actual cost (no mark-ups). These include, but are not limited to: Travel to and from the vessel for all crew members using the most practical means available (air, train, Uber, etc); $50 per diem per crewmember (if the trip is 2 or more days); hotel expenses for each crew member if on-board accommodations are not available or functioning (berth, head, water, heat or AC when needed)(nearest Fairfield Inn, Courtyard or similar hotel will be used); Fuel, oil and any other consumables required to run the vessel; Marina/Port fees including any service or dock fees; any maintenance, equipment or supplies needed to safely complete the delivery.

How does insurance work in regards delivery captains?

We carry liability insurance to cover any damage to your boat or another’s property caused by any member of the crew. However, some insurance companies require delivery captains to be listed temporarily on the boat’s policy. Be sure to check with your insurance company for their requirements. Any documentation needed from us by your insurance company can be provided.

Are there any other requirements to deliver my boat?

Boat registration and insurance must be valid for the duration of the trip. Any delivery contract must be signed by the vessel’s owner or agent. Valid copies of all vessel documents (registration, insurance, etc.) must be provided. Other requirements will include a safety and equipment inspection. Any equipment deemed missing or damaged, but necessary to safely deliver the vessel, will need to be provided or repaired prior to departing.

Can I save money by being a deckhand?

Unfortunately, no. I choose and train my deckhands personally, so they know what’s expected, when it’s expected and how I expect them to perform their tasks. There are many things that need to be performed, especially when departing from and arriving at a location, and my attention needs to remain on the operation of the vessel, not trying to make sure other tasks are being performed properly.
